We work together to continually develop and implement sustainable solutions. Through Green Thread, our environmental sustainability platform, we bring innovative and efficient solutions to life. We are passionately focused on reducing the environmental impact within our operations.

Here are just a few ways we work to make our campus more environmentally conscious:

Local Purchasing

Locally Grown: Did you know Dining Services sources food from many local farmers, growers and distributors? The list changes throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability. However, here is a sampling of a few of our partners:

  • All of our milk and yogurts
  • Coffee & Teas from Just Us! Coffee Roasters
  • Locally made breads
  • Eggs
  • Maple Syrup
  • Seafood such as haddock and salmon is responsibly sourced with the MSC certified: Marine Stewardship Council
  • Fruits & Vegetables (in season)

Be on the look out for our Locally Grown menu icon when dining around campus as we continue to partner with local and provincial businesses such as Noggins, H&E Keddy Bros, Made with Local, Bento and so much more!

This discount is exclusive to C-Store, Sandwich Shack, and Student Centre Food Court. At our franchise locations (Starbucks and Tim Hortons), you can get 0.10 cent off any iced or hot beverage if you bring a reusable cup or mug!

Coolfood Meals

Coolfood: Dining services offers a variety of low carbon meals at our dining hall. Coolfood is a movement to help reduce the climate impact of food. These meals must fall under a maximum threshold of per-meal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on recipe data submitted to WRI, World Resources Institute, a global research organization. WRI then uses the Coolfood Calculator to look at the impact of the ingredients from farm to fork. Look for this icon to see what Coolfood meals you can try!

Recycling

Fryer Oil & Recycling: Dining Services continues to recycle not only our plastic, metal, glass, and paper around campus but also our fryer oil! One hundred percent of our oil is recycled in partnership with Saint Mary's University!

Green Cleaning & Water Conversation

Green Cleaning: All dining locations are committed to using cleaning products in our operations to reduce the need for chemical based cleaning products and provide a healthy and safe learning environment.

Trayless Dining: Did you know Dining Services has been trayless since 2015? By dining trayless, you have helped positively impact the waste stream. Dining trayless minimizes food waste, conserves energy and water, and reduces the amount of cleaning chemicals entering the waste stream.
